From Tradition to Transformation: A Critical Content Evaluation of Iranian High-School English Textbooks

The Post-revolutionary English language education system in Iran has undergone significant changes, particularly with the implementation of The Fundamental Transformation of Education. This landmark document ushered in a pivotal reform, primarily evident in the creation of a new series of textbooks, which has been the subject of various research studies. However, a gap in the literature is apparent, as thematic analyses of these newly-developed textbooks have been largely overlooked. Recognizing this gap, the present study seeks to fill it by evaluating these textbooks from a thematic perspective. The findings highlight noteworthy shifts in the approach, structure, and appearance of the new high-school textbooks, accompanied by a functional transformation in topics and content selection. Unlike the previous textbooks that focused on bland topics and sanitized themes such as stories and biographies, the revised textbooks now incorporate socially and emotionally engaging subjects. This shift includes real-life concerns, local and global issues, fostering awareness, responsibility, and self-esteem among learners. Consequently, this integration creates an environment conducive to both language skills development and the social and moral growth of the students.
