چکیده مقاله
There is a growing interest in developing higher order cognitive skills, such as creative thinking and critical thinking in students in order to enable them to control their learning process. Prompted by this idea, we investigated the relationship among three variables of creative thinking skills, critical thinking skills, and learning strategy use with a focus on Iranian EFL learners’ proficiency level through a survey research design. A total number of 169 Iranian students learning English were selected to complete three questionnaires on creative thinking, critical thinking skills, and learning strategy use. The results of the study revealed that there was a positive correlation between critical thinking and language learning strategies for both intermediate and advanced students. Moreover, there was a significantly negative correlation between creative thinking and language learning strategy among students with a high level of proficiency. It was also found that proficiency level had a positive relationship with language learning strategy use among intermediate students. Finally, the results of standard multiple regression analyses indicated that the proposed model, consisting of creative thinking, critical thinking, and learning strategy use was an appropriate tool to predict the proficiency level of the students. Therefore, it is recommended to be deployed as a method for prediction and assessment of students with different proficiency levels.
