Language Learning and the Deployment of Cultural Elements in Literary Work

The application of literary based materials and approaches in TEFL has recently received profound status and consideration. Literary works and intellectuals’ endeavor have always stood as the landmark of revelation of the common themes of their time. Deploying action research approach, this article hinging on students’ reflective essays, text and context analysis of the work, has scrutinized Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mocking Bird to detect the elements that awaken EFL to- be teacher students’ cultural consciousness. The subjects were twenty-two TTC to-be-teacher students. It was carried out using reader response theory approach. The article, implicitly, confirmed the rich content of the fiction to be utilized as authentic material for teaching linguistic and cultural purposes in educational settings from non-native English learners’ view point. The results revealed the rich content of literary texts and their suitability for deployment in the EFL classes for the purpose of teaching and learning in the classes.
