Investigating the Educational Goals of Senior High school English Language Textbooks Based on the Proposed Criteria of the Fundamental Transformation of Education Document(FTED) |

Given the significance of the FTED in the education system, this research aims to identify and describe the concepts and exercises in high school English textbooks through qualitative analysis of the content, based on the proposed criteria of the FTED. Additionally, it seeks to highlight the advantages and shortcomings of these textbooks and provide suggestions for improvement. The contextual content of the FTED was examined using the directional content analysis method. The results revealed that the objectives of English language teaching, in accordance with the FTED, include: 1. Understanding and critically analyzing non-Iranian culture, 2. Responsible interaction to introduce Iranian-Islamic culture and civilization, as well as promoting domestic findings and achievements, and 3. Effective interaction and communication with non-Iranian parties, which consists of two micro objectives: a) Understanding and mastering domestic issues, and b) Knowledge and awareness of transnational issues. Furthermore, it was noted that the FTED needs to be revised in terms of structure and methodology strategies in order to clarify the position and related strategies for teaching a foreign language to achieve these objectives. Afterwards, a deductive content analysis was conducted on the English textbooks of the Vision series, specifically books 1, 2, and 3. The analysis revealed that the Vision Series primarily focuses on native culture, lacking a balanced representation of non-native culture as outlined in the education transformation document. This document emphasizes the importance of incorporating regional, Islamic world, and global perspectives. |
