Language Assessment Literacy Instruction: Inquiry-Based Vs Expository Instructional Approaches Among Student Teachers

Assessment in sociocultural theory is viewed as an integral part of any pedagogical system; hence, language teachers' assessment literacy needs to be refurbished in teacher education centers. However, adopting the appropriate instructional approaches by the teacher educators is not well researched and requires further investigation. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of two instructional approaches, inquiry-based and expository, on student teachers' conception of assessment. To this end, 100 sophomore and junior students studying BA in TEFL program were divided into experimental and control groups where they received instruction using inquiry-based and expository approaches respectively. The Students' Conceptions of Assessment (SCoA) questionnaire developed originally by Brown (2009) and revalidated among Iranian English language student teachers was administered before and after the treatment in both groups. Metaphor analysis was also used to collect qualitative data from the student teachers in the previous phase. The results revealed that the participants’ conceptions of assessment did not change significantly. Nevertheless, the results of metaphor analysis indicated a notable change in their conception about assessment before and after the intervention. It was concluded that despite the insignificant statistical difference between their conceptions of assessment via the instructional approaches, the student teachers gained insight into how they perceive of assessment in their learning and teaching process.
