چکیده مقاله |
This research is meant to study why Iranian English teachers decide to teach English as their career and what their motivations might be. The population of this study included ten English teachers working in Iranian public high schools teaching in different provinces who participated in the interview. The instruments used in this study for data gathering were semi-structured interviews and questionnaire. The findings gained from the qualitative data from the interviews and surveys show that there are such external factors as poverty, fear of unemployment, and a lack of other job options, the obligation imposed by family, exemption from military service for men, the suitability of the job for women, and finally long vacations are, respectively, the most important reasons for people to indulge in this occupation. On the other hand, however, interest in English and interest in teaching are internal motives, and serving society was found to be the only humanistic factor to engage in this career. Teachers' high tendency to change jobs, quit the job, and early retirement are indicative of teachers' dissatisfaction with their jobs. Furthermore, according to the findings of the research, salary and bonus, social respect and positions, educational and office policies, work environment and conditions, students, self-efficacy and professional development, educational resources, principals' feedback, parents and co-workers, teacher's independence, the role of teachers in policy making, and helping the students are among the most important factors in teachers' motivations. |
