چکیده مقاله |
Textbooks are pivotal in the teaching and learning process, particularly in the field of English language education. This study aimed to investigate and compare English textbooks used in schools and institutes, based on student perspectives. The evaluation of these textbooks followed the criteria outlined in Litz's checklist. A total of fourteen students, who had experience studying both types of textbooks, were recruited from junior high schools in Zanjan Province to participate in semi-structured interviews. The interview questions were designed, validated, and administered, consisting of 10 general questions in order to evaluate the textbooks across 10 major criteria: quality, price, layout and design, supplementary materials, sequence of lessons, pronunciation, activities, skills, language type, and subject content. The findings revealed that the school textbooks fall short of achieving the desired objectives of language learning. Conversely, the students exhibited a more positive perception towards the textbooks used in institutes. The data collected also indicated that the institutional textbooks equally represent the four language skills and boast excellent quality in terms of layout and design. Additionally, these textbooks offer adequate and valuable supplementary materials, as well as informative content. Overall, the students expressed satisfaction with the institutional textbooks in relation to the other criteria outlined in the checklist. However, despite positive feedback on school textbooks, there is a need for substantial improvement. The research yields implications on the pedagogical value of both school and institutional textbooks in fulfilling their objectives and meeting the needs of English language students. |
