Critical thinking is a cognitive skill which influences our way of thinking and one cannot react to a fair and precise conclusion without critical thinking. Critical thinking plays a very important factor in educational fields. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of teaching critical thinking skills on enhancing the level of critical thinking and reading comprehension of Iranian EFL learners. For this purpose, 40 in-service EFL teachers studying in Farhangian University in Iran were randomly selected and were given the reading comprehension test and critical thinking test questions as pretest. Embedded within critical thinking course curriculum, critical thinking skills interventions was systematically included in the researcher’s instructional strategies at 4-week intervals throughout the semester. The instructor taught any of critical thinking skills to students, outlining what is expected of students for that particular skill and assignment related to it. Then, critical thinking and reading comprehension posttest were administered after the training program came to an end in order to see the effect of critical thinking intervention program. The results indicated that a critical thinking teaching intervention can increase knowledge of critical thinking skills and attitudes towards critical thinking. Lastly, it can make an influence on enhancing the students’ level of reading comprehension after they are taught how to read reading comprehension test critically. Therefore, students should be allowed to openly express their opinions without fear of judgment, censure, or reproach, and educators can encourage optimal critical thinking behaviors and attitudes through effective modeling of those behaviors. |
