The Role of Azeri L1 and Persian L2 on the L3 Acquisition of English Attributive Adjectives by Iranian Bilingual Learners across proficiency levels

A central goal of much research within the realm of third language acquisition (TLA) has been to develop insight into how previously acquired languages (L1, L2, and Ln) could affect the process of acquiring a third language. The present study sought to uncover the effect of Azeri L1 and Persian L2 on the acquisition of English attributive adjectives by bilingual learners at various proficiency levels. It further investigated the role of L3 general proficiency and its interaction with the effect of previously learned languages. To meet these objectives, 90 Azeri-Persian bilingual students from Miyandoab (an Azeri-speaking city in Iran) took a general English proficiency test, a background questionnaire, and two production tests of translation, one from Azeri into English and another from Persian into English. The data, then, were analyzed through descriptive statistics, MANOVA and simple effect analysis. The obtained results indicated the effect of Persian L2 on the acquisition of English attributive adjectives. L3 general proficiency, also, proved to have an effect on the performance of participants on both translation tests. Furthermore, levels of proficiency had a strong interaction with the types of translations. The study bears implications for bilingual programs in EFL contexts, especially Iran.
