Empowering EFL students' critical thinking as a creative process through MALL

چکیده مقاله

In this study, critical thinking skills are presented and practiced through MALL, and the effect of such instruction on the EFL students' language proficiency is examined. The paper considers how MALL-based instruction affects EFL learners’ critical thinking. 90 EFL learners from language institutes in Tehran, Kerman, and Zahedan in Iran who were selected through stratified random sampling, participated in this research. The students were divided into two experimental and two control groups. Four experienced teachers only taught the students in the experimental groups how to apply critical thinking skills through Notability Note Taking and Explain Everything apps run through mobile phones. Pre-test and post-test were administered through English Proficiency Test app. The participants in the experimental groups were taught inductive and deductive reasoning, evaluation and interpretation, and Socratic questioning, whereas in the control groups, lower order thinking MALL, such as classification, memorization, and note taking were emphasized. The results of the study computed through Independent Samples t-test, One-Way ANOVA, Pearson Product Moment Correlation, and Spearman’s rho correlation, revealed that: a) teaching critical thinking skills through MALL had a significant effect on the language learning proficiency of EFL learners; b) teaching critical thinking through MALL had a significant effect on EFL learners across different proficiency levels, and finally c) the results showed that there was no significant relationship between the age of the EFL learners and thier proficiency levels. The study tries to expound on the enhancement of proficiency of students through Mall, and facilitates this process through critical thinking skills.
