چکیده مقاله
Over the course of textbook evaluation history, certain textbook characteristics have been commonly accepted as ideal universal standards. The aim of this study is to examine whether or not the universally accepted characteristics of an ideal textbook still hold true to Iranian ELT instructors. Due to the nature of the research inquiry, qualitative research approach was deemed appropriate. Conducting a multiple case study, data were collected through semi-structured interviews from five Iranian ELT instructors active in Iranian schools and institutions. The data was analyzed through coding, undergoing three stages of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The analysis of the data resulted in four major categories that according to our participants, can be characteristics of an ideal textbook. Among these categories were culture, content, and layout and design. Carefully studying the two sets of criteria, it was determined that the universal characteristics of an ideal textbook align with
what Iranian ELT instructors perceive ideal.
