چکیده مقاله
Materials evaluators in the field of ELT as well as those in other disciplines of humanities and social sciences commonly question the development and use of sanitized materials. The attribute, however, has been used differently by different scholars. In the absence of any conceptualization of the term, the paper provided an ostensive definition of the multi-component concept by seeking to find common threads running through the relevant literature. A close perusal of the literature found it associated, inter alia, with including safe and neutral topics, displaying an idealized lifestyle and a homogenous society, as well as being selective and exclusionary. The investigation then applied the conceptual framework to ELT materials locally produced for Iranian schools, that is, Prospect and Vision series designed to be taught in junior and senior secondary schools, respectively. Findings revealed an almost total exclusion of the above elements in the textbooks pointing to the existence of a conservative outlook in their creation. The paper ends by arguing the textbooks developed for a given sociocultural context should possess a healthy dose of various topics and genres if they are to survive competition in a world where teachers and learners have access to a wide range of resources.
