The Effect of Applying Meta-cognitive Strategies and Incorporating Collective Peer Scaffolding on Iranian EFL Learners’ Writing Skill |

Abstract Although research has provided various findings regarding the benefits of peer scaffolding in EFL writing context and although the metacognitive strategies has been of investigators’ concern, no study so far has investigated the influence of both in a single study. The present study thus examined the combined impact of metacognitive strategies as well as collective peer scaffolding on Iranian EFL Learners’ writing skill. To fulfill such a purpose, sixty Iranian intermediate EFL learners were selected. They were asked to perform some writing tasks both individually and collaboratively, while the planning process was also regarded. The fluency, accuracy and complexity of Iranian EFL learners' written performances were measured in different settings. The results revealed that when writing individually, with no planning time available, Iranian intermediate-level EFL learners created more complex texts in their complex task and more fluent texts in their simple task. Moreover, the results indicated that when writing collaboratively, with some planning time available, the learners created more fluent texts in their complex tasks. |
