A Content Analysis of Gender Stereotyping in Prospect 2 Books, Taught in Iranian Secondary Schools: A Collaborative Action Research

Gender stereotypes are a pervasive issue that affect people of all ages, races, and cultures, more exclusively in this research, teenagers of secondary schools. This study aims to investigate these stereotypes at the grassroot level of society, which is schools. The constant exposure of students to These stereotypes through textbooks can have a profound impact on individuals' self-image, limiting their potential and perpetuating inequality between males and females in society. The study focuses on a locally designed EFL textbook, Prospect 2, both student and work books, taught in Iranian Secondary Schools and examines five categories: visibility, firstness, generic masculine construction, occupation, and activities. The method used for this research is a quantitative action research, and the findings have been compared based on tables and percentages. The results show that a significant amount of the textbook's content demonstrates gender stereotypes. These findings indicate that gender stereotypes have penetrated from society into textbooks, which can negatively impact students' self-image and views about gender roles. The main focus of this study and its findings is to emphasize the importance of raising awareness among authors and teachers to prevent the formation of gender stereotypes on students' subconscious by adapting the content during teaching. Overall, this research highlights the need for a more inclusive and unbiased approach to education to promote equality between males and females in society.
