The Effect(s) of Using Light Background Instrumental Music on Teacher- Students' Outputs in Online Classes

Online classes have changed learning environment in some parts of the world. Many universities and colleges around the world altered their face-to-face classes by online education. In this situation, approaching educational standards and targets and decreasing possible negative impacts of online classes on learning are the goals of universities, instructors and students. There is evidence that background instrumental music can positively affect learning environment toward better achievements in educational classes, but there is little literature on using background music in online classes. The aim of the present paper is to have a closer look on the effect(s) of background instrumental music on teacher -students' outputs in Farhangian university in online classes. To do so, 44 teacher students passing general English courses at Farhangian University (22 males and 22 females), whose level of English were Intermediate, were requested to attend an 18-session vocabulary course for learning 504 English words and another 18-session class for learning Intermediate English Grammar. The learners of both experimental and control groups passed pre-tests and post-tests and the results were analyzed using SPSS software. The results of the present study showed a 14 percent of higher effectiveness in learning vocabulary and 8 percent of higher effectiveness in learning grammar for the experimental group.The results show meaningful relations between using instrumental music and the overall output of the students.
