Causes of Boredom in General English Classes in the EFL Context: A Case of Traditional Face-to-Face Classes |

Although in the past few years, researchers in the field of applied linguistics have paid considerable attention to positive and negative emotions (e.g., enjoyment and anxiety) in L2 learning and teaching, boredom in the L2 context has recently attracted the attention of researchers. Most studies in the field of L2 boredom have examined the causes of boredom in online L2 classes. Furthermore, they have mostly been conducted in Poland, and just recently started in China, Thailand, and Iran. In order to fill the gap, the present study explored the antecedents of boredom in traditional face-to-face General English classes at a university in Iran. Participants were 20 Persian-speaking non-English majors who took part in an interview with the first author, in order to identify the causes of boredom. After the analysis of the qualitative data, the findings revealed three factors responsible for boredom in this study: a) course-book related factors, b) teacher-related factors, and c) student-related factors which echoed the theories of boredom. Pedagogical implications and suggestions for further research are stated in the study. |
