The relation of self-esteem with English achievement at different levels of English proficiency in Iranian EFL context

The main objective of this research was to explore the relation of self-esteem with English achievement of EFL learners in Iran. The relationship was investigated at different levels of English proficiency (beginning, intermediate, and advanced). Furthermore, the role of gender and levels of English language proficiency in self-esteem were studied. The participants of this research composed of 120 students who were studying English at the Iran Language Institute. They were administered the Coopersmith Standardized Questionnaire of self-esteem. Also, the students' English achievement was their grades in English course for one academic term. Results of the correlation coefficient and multiple regressions indicated that self-esteem related significantly and positively to the students' English achievement. A great percent of variance in learners' English achievement was accounted by self-esteem especially for advanced students. Furthermore, results of ANOVA showed that Males and females had similar self-esteem. Hence, to enhance learners' English achievement, their self-esteem must be considered. The findings of this research provide some implications for the English teachers in order to prepare situations that result in more effective teaching.
