Iranian High School ELT Textbooks: A Checklist-Based Evaluative Review by Eclectic Global Standards

Numerous experts and researchers have claimed their contemplation or research criteria as global
benchmarks on textbook evaluation through checklists. The study aimed to conduct a research on
Iranian High School ELT textbooks and define their strengths and flaws by means of those
standards. To do so, 15 articles on English textbook evaluation containing various criteria and
questions were examined; based on which a checklist was developed, embracing common and
fundamental criteria and questions. The checklist was distributed among 24 university students all
over Iran; selected due to researchers’ convenience, to analyze High School ELT textbooks and
check whether they possess those elements mentioned in the checklist. The gathered data was
analyzed through SPSS, indicating that the textbooks were not standard according to those criteria,
since the maximum total response to questions was NO; except for listening skill, which gained
equal frequency percent. Teachers or textbook designers could get inspired by the results and the
benchmarks in order to develop high School ELT textbooks, for adapting and attaining Ideal and
adequate ones. Furthermore, this study might be found effective for future researches as a
comprehensive resource due to is extensive checklist, hoping that it will be efficiently utilized in
the field
